German Authorities Identify Neo-Nazi Suspect in 1970 Munich Jewish Nursing Home Arson

German authorities have significantly strengthened suspicions against a neo-Nazi believed to have set fire to a Jewish nursing home in Munich in 1970, an attack that killed seven Holocaust survivors and injured 15 others. The arson occurred on the evening of February 13, 1970, at the Jewish community building on Reichenbach Street in Munich and Upper Bavaria. Flammable liquid was poured and ignited in a wooden stairwell, the only access to the nursing home and guesthouse, causing the fire to spread rapidly and block escape routes.

The suspect, a 25-year-old German citizen at the time, was known for his far-right extremist views and antisemitism. Although his name was not officially released, the German magazine Der Spiegel identified him partially as Bernd V. The investigation was reopened in April 2025 after new testimony from a woman who reported that shortly before the fire, the suspect was near the nursing home saying, "Jews have everything, I want to set them on fire." Witnesses described him as obsessed with Hitler, listening to Nazi speeches, practicing shooting near Hitler's former retreat in Obersalzberg, and having a history of explosives use and violent behavior.

The suspect had been known to authorities since the 1970s, with previous investigations unable to gather sufficient evidence for prosecution. A renewed probe by the German federal prosecutor closed in 2017 without results. The recent investigation found "substantiated reasons" to believe he was responsible, but no legal judgment can be made as the suspect died in 2020. Authorities also could not confirm if he acted alone, though no evidence of accomplices was found. The case is now closed without charges or a court ruling.

This arson remains one of the deadliest antisemitic attacks in Germany since World War II, highlighting the long-lasting impact of extremist violence and the challenges of achieving justice decades later.
