Basel Faces Security Tensions Over Planned Anti-Zionist Rally on Zionism Congress Anniversary

Basel, Switzerland, is experiencing heightened security concerns following calls on social media by a group named "Basel for Palestine" to hold a protest on August 29 under the slogan "Death to Zionism." This date coincides with the opening day of the first Zionist Congress, convened by Theodor Herzl in Basel in 1897. The Basel-Stadt cantonal police have stated that no official permit application has been submitted for the event, which is required by local law at least two weeks in advance for public gatherings. Authorities have declined to disclose their operational plans should the unauthorized demonstration proceed.

Jonathan Kreutner, Secretary General of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Switzerland (SIG), condemned the planned rally, urging authorities to identify and prosecute the organizers. He emphasized that such calls pose a direct threat to the existence of the State of Israel and cause genuine concern among the local Jewish community.

The anonymous organizers' statement, shared with no identified individuals behind it, explicitly calls for the destruction of Zionism from its birthplace, urging support for a free Palestine and opposition to Zionist ideology. They chose the historically significant date and location deliberately, contrasting the 1897 congress that established the Zionist movement with their current goal to mobilize against Israel and Zionism.
