Israel and Syria Hold US-Sponsored Talks in Jordan to De-escalate Tensions

A Syrian delegation led by Foreign Minister and including the heads of general and military intelligence met with a senior Israeli delegation in Jordan on Monday under US auspices. The talks aimed to reduce escalation following recent Israeli strikes in Syria, according to Channel 12 news. Syrian Foreign Ministry and SANA reports said discussions focused on establishing practical mechanisms to halt attacks and renewing a security agreement that could serve as a basis for a comprehensive deal.

The Syrian side made clear it would not accept any agreement restricting its military buildup or alliances with other countries. They reiterated that the Golan Heights is Syrian territory under occupation but said its status should be discussed later. The immediate priority, they stated, is Israel’s withdrawal to positions held before December 8, 2024, and the renewal of the 1974 separation of forces agreement.

The talks also highlighted the importance of efforts to bridge differences between Turkey and Israel to prevent tensions from spilling into Syrian territory. Amid rising security tensions, it was revealed that Mossad chief Ronen Gophman held a secret conversation with Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shibini via sensitive communication channels. This dialogue addressed Turkey’s military presence in Syria and preceded an unusual Israeli strike on the Abu al-Duhur military airport.
