New Docuseries Highlights Israeli Youth Overcoming Hardships Before IDF Service
A new documentary by Oded Harush, titled "The Preparation for Victory," explores the journeys of Israeli youths from diverse backgrounds who face significant challenges yet are determined to serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The first episode focuses on the "Echad MiShlanu" pre-military preparatory program in Mitzpe Ilan, which commits to supporting every young person regardless of their past.
Among those featured is Velvel Brown, who grew up in the Gur Hasidic community but left the faith at age 12 and later fell into heavy drug use, spending what he estimates as 400,000 shekels on narcotics. His turning point came when he overheard his mother crying about his behavior, prompting him to self-detox by isolating himself for about a month. Despite relapses, Velvel committed to proving his transformation by voluntarily undergoing weekly urine tests at the preparatory program.
Another story is that of Netanel Malka, who cycled through various institutions before turning to drug dealing at age 16. He was arrested during a drug transaction but was later granted permission by a judge to attend the preparatory program after the judge visited the facility. Both youths now strive to complete their military service, viewing it as a duty to protect their country and community.
The series aims to challenge stereotypes about Israeli youth, especially following the October 7 attacks, by showing their readiness to defend the nation despite past difficulties. It offers an emotional look at young people rebuilding their lives and preparing for military and civilian futures.
