Japanese Study Links Number of Natural Teeth to Pancreatic Cancer Survival
A recent study from Hiroshima University in Japan found a surprising association between the number of natural teeth and survival rates among pancreatic cancer patients. The research examined 339 patients who underwent radical surgery for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, an aggressive form of the disease. Each patient had a dental examination before surgery to count their remaining natural teeth and assess their chewing ability.
The study revealed that patients with 21 or more natural teeth had a median survival of 60.7 months, nearly five years, compared to 39.1 months, just over three years, for those with 20 or fewer teeth. This difference of approximately 21.6 months suggests a notable correlation, although the researchers caution that the number of teeth does not directly cause longer survival.
Researchers propose that tooth loss may reflect broader health factors accumulated over a lifetime, such as chronic inflammation, smoking, nutrition, other illnesses, lifestyle, and physical frailty. The study also found no independent link between chewing ability and survival, indicating that tooth count might be an external marker of overall health rather than a direct influence.
Even after adjusting for tumor stage, lymph node involvement, surgical margins, chemotherapy, and nutritional status, the association between tooth count and survival remained significant. The team is exploring whether oral bacteria and inflammation could play a role in pancreatic tumor development, but no causal mechanism was established.
The study's limitations include its single-center design in Japan and its observational nature, which prevents conclusions about cause and effect. Future research with larger, diverse populations is needed to confirm these findings and clarify underlying mechanisms. If validated, dental health assessments might become a useful tool for evaluating patient health in pancreatic cancer treatment.
