Avi Benayahu Issues Rare Warning on Security of Leading Prime Minister Candidate

Avi Benayahu, former spokesman for the Shin Bet, issued an unusual and urgent warning on Sunday regarding the security arrangements for a leading candidate for Israel's prime ministership. While expressing respect for Supreme Court Justice and Central Elections Committee Chairman Noam Solberg, Benayahu emphasized that responsibility for the candidate's protection lies with the head of the Shin Bet, who currently is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Benayahu criticized recent changes in the oversight of security bodies, stating that Netanyahu has subordinated the Security Cabinet and the professional advisory committee, which were once professional and independent, turning them into politicized entities.

Benayahu concluded his statement by drawing a parallel between the current security situation and the atmosphere preceding the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, which was preceded by intense incitement. He warned that the present situation is "seven times more dangerous" than before, expressing deep concern as a citizen who witnessed the Rabin assassination. His remarks highlight growing tensions and perceived risks surrounding the protection of political figures in Israel amid a charged political climate.

The warning comes amid broader security concerns, including recent directives by Minister of National Infrastructure, Energy and Water Resources, Israel Katz, to intensify actions against incendiary kite attacks from Gaza.
