Residents Near Gaza Fear Return to Containment Policy After Fire Balloon Attacks

Four incendiary balloons crossed from the Gaza Strip into the Gaza border area over the weekend, reigniting trauma among local residents from the October 7 attacks. Ilan Yohanan, a farmer and member of the security team in the Ein Hashlosha moshav, expressed deep frustration and distrust toward the Israeli government in an interview with HaOlam HaBoker. He described a significant erosion of personal security and accused the political and military leadership of reverting to a policy of containment rather than deterrence. Yohanan said, "I sleep with an M16 under my pillow, is that normal?" and added that the current rules of engagement reflect a lack of deterrence, which terrifies residents.

In response, a senior officer told Channel 13 News that there is no tolerance for the incendiary balloons, citing that 20 targeted killings of Hamas operatives took place just this week as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate militants linked to the October 7 attacks. The officer emphasized continued operations to prevent future terrorist planning and attacks.
