Former 'Next Top Model' Winner Mocks Tyra Banks Over Netflix Lawsuit
The backlash around Netflix’s documentary on America’s Next Top Model intensified after Tyra Banks filed a defamation lawsuit over how she says she was portrayed. Banks, 52, claims the documentary, Reality Check: Behind America’s Next Top Model, distorted her words, used selective editing, and inserted only small portions of her interview to support what she calls a false and defamatory narrative.
Adrianne Curry, the show’s first winner, responded with ridicule on Instagram. Curry, 43, wrote that she had read Banks was suing Netflix because she did not like how she was edited, then laughed and said, “Bitch, really?” She added in the caption, “Welcome to the club.”
In her complaint, Banks asks for a jury trial to determine damages. She says the filmmakers “manufactured drama” through slanted editing and the deliberate omission of information. The filing says Banks agreed to take part because she believed viewers deserved an honest discussion about the franchise’s legacy, including both its successes and failures.
The lawsuit further alleges that the interviews used in the documentary were taken out of context and reassembled to support a “false and defamatory narrative” unrelated to what Banks actually said. Curry did not participate in the documentary, although she has previously praised Banks, saying in February that Banks does not apologize for the controversies tied to the show and that she respects her refusal to cave to pressure.
