Israeli Sex Offender Aryeh Gottlieb Found Dead in Detention Two Months After 24-Year Sentence
Aryeh Gottlieb, a 76-year-old convicted sex offender from northern Israel, was found dead in his cell at the Magen-Nitzan detention center on Saturday. His death occurred roughly two months after the Haifa District Court sentenced him to 24 years in prison for a series of severe sexual offenses against a girl who was only 11 years old at the time of the crimes.
Gottlieb was convicted in June for offenses committed between 1997 and 2001. The court found that he exploited the trust of the victim's immigrant family, under whose protection he had placed himself, to repeatedly assault the child. Throughout the trial, Gottlieb denied the charges, but the court accepted the victim's testimony.
In its ruling, the court acknowledged the long delay before the victim came forward but emphasized that the psychological scars from Gottlieb's actions remain deeply felt. Despite Gottlieb's advanced age and poor health, the court imposed a lengthy and deterrent sentence due to the gravity of the crimes and the young age of the victim.
Following his sentencing, Gottlieb began serving his prison term, which ended abruptly with his death in custody. The Israel Prison Service has appointed a team to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death, as is standard procedure in such cases.
