US Deploys New Aircraft Carrier to Middle East Amid Rising Iran Tensions and Approves Qatar Tanker Jet Sale

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Thursday that the aircraft carrier USS George Washington has arrived in the Middle East, specifically in the Arabian Sea near the Persian Gulf. This deployment is part of a planned rotation, replacing the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been at sea for over 260 days under difficult conditions that have reportedly affected crew morale.

The arrival of the George Washington allows the Lincoln to return to its home base while maintaining the ongoing naval blockade against Iran. US President Donald Trump has vowed to continue the blockade until Iran complies with US demands amid worsening economic conditions in Iran. However, Iranian officials have rejected any concessions and warned of renewed conflict if the blockade persists.

In response to Iran's refusal to negotiate, Trump announced plans to intensify economic sanctions, describing the forthcoming measures as the "most crushing economic operation ever" against any country. He threatened to penalize nations continuing trade with Iran, following the United Arab Emirates' recent decision to sever economic ties with Tehran. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is scheduled to detail these new sanctions in a press conference on Monday.

Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the US sanctions as economic terrorism and a crime against humanity, asserting Iran's resolve to defend its national interests and repel US and Israeli aggression by all means.

Separately, the US State Department approved a $4.5 billion sale of four KC-46A aerial refueling tankers and related equipment to Qatar. The deal aims to enhance Qatar's ability to address current and future threats and strengthen cooperation with US and allied forces. US officials emphasized that the sale will not alter the basic military balance in the region but will support a strategic regional partner important for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.
