Coalition Backs Away From Childcare Subsidy Bill After Public Backlash
On Monday morning, coalition leaders told the ultra-Orthodox parties that the bill to subsidize daycare for draft evaders would not be brought to the Knesset plenum for its first reading, citing public criticism of the proposal.
The Ultra-Orthodox factions reacted angrily and threatened to withhold support for any other legislation if the bill is not advanced. Their warning raises the risk of further strain inside the coalition.
Degel HaTorah chairman Moshe Gafni said, “If there is no majority for this bill, there is no majority for anything else. If they do not bring it to a vote, they can close the plenum. We will not vote with the coalition.”
