Israeli Comedian Ordered to Pay Woman Thousands for Weight-Related Insults During Show
Israeli stand-up comedian Vladimir Tamarkin has been ordered by the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court to compensate a woman thousands of shekels after insulting her weight during a performance. The woman, who attended a Russian-speaking comedy show in Bat Yam last year, was called "fat" and compared to a boxer and a fat cat by Tamarkin, remarks the court ruled as defamatory and beyond acceptable comedic boundaries. Judge Tzipora Ohana Kafesh acknowledged that stand-up comedy often involves coarse language but emphasized that humiliations crossing certain limits must be avoided.
The woman claimed Tamarkin said, "Soon a man who weighs like you will come on stage. He has been in boxing for eight years," and also, "You remind me of my cat. You are as fat as she is." Tamarkin, 22, denied making these statements and argued that audience members expect provocative humor as part of the experience. He also suggested the woman confused his words with those of other comedians performing that night.
The judge found the woman's testimony credible and determined the insults exceeded reasonable limits, especially given the references to her weight and the fat cat analogy. While considering the woman's choice to sit in the front row, which made it more likely Tamarkin addressed her directly, the court awarded her 10,000 shekels in damages, including 4,000 shekels for legal expenses, less than the 50,000 shekels she sought.
Tamarkin responded to the ruling by expressing sadness over the distress caused but claimed the court's decision was unfair and that such comments should not incur legal liability. He also noted the case boosted his career despite the negative aspects. The ruling highlights the balance courts seek between comedic freedom and protection from personal humiliation in Israeli entertainment law.
