Artist Abraham Grobais Releases Emotional Song Inspired by Hasidic Shofar Blast on Purim
Ahead of the Jewish High Holy Days, artist Abraham Grobais presents a powerful and historic composition titled "Tear of the Shofar." The song weaves a rare Hasidic story into a tapestry of ancient, soulful melodies. The narrative begins on a stormy Purim afternoon at the tish (Hasidic gathering) of the Bohush Rebbe, when a Hasid suddenly entered wearing a white kittel and blowing the shofar in the middle of the festive day. The Hasidim were puzzled, but the Rebbe’s face unexpectedly turned serious. In a shocking move, the Rebbe requested the Rosh Hashanah prayer book and began reciting the shofar blowing order with a trembling voice. The Hasid following him blew the shofar with devotion and tears, moving the crowd to sing the prayer "May the expression of our lips be acceptable before You" with great emotion. At the end, the Rebbe told the Hasid, "May you come again next year," turning the Purim shofar blowing into a sacred annual tradition.
The story takes a dramatic turn during the COVID-19 pandemic on Rosh Hashanah 5781, when prayers were held outdoors due to restrictions. While the community listened to the shofar blasts from the street, the same Hasid stood on his balcony deeply moved. Suddenly, during the shofar blowing, he passed away, with the shofar sounds below becoming a spiritual farewell. The song’s lyrics and performance by Abraham Grobais and his sons honor this poignant tale, blending ancient melodies with heartfelt storytelling.
