Rights Group Demands Probe Into Police Raid on Wedding in Umm al-Fahm
The Mosaico Center for Arab Citizens' Rights in Israel has called for an immediate investigation into a police raid on a private wedding held at the Mustapha al-Afan family home in Umm al-Fahm on Saturday night. The center addressed its demand to Israel Police Commissioner Major General Dany Levi and the Police Investigations Department, also notifying regional commanders. The group alleges excessive use of force, unlawful entry, and violations of fundamental rights during the operation, which involved a large police presence, stun grenades, orders for guests to lie on the ground, body searches, and damage to property including chairs, a stage, and cameras.
Mosaico's lawyer Kamal Houri described the event as traumatic for the family and attendees, highlighting the aggressive and humiliating conduct of officers. Video footage reportedly shows a police officer using a Taser on a young man already restrained. Police justified the raid by suspicion of weapons use at the wedding but found no arms or arrested anyone. Mosaico criticized the vague grounds for the raid and called it a degrading collective search and indiscriminate use of force, emphasizing that the Arab community is disproportionately affected by illegal weapons and crime and expects focused police action.
The center demanded preservation of all evidence, including bodycam footage, communications, operational logs, and authorization documents, and requested clarification on who ordered the raid and the legal basis for it. It also urged Umm al-Fahm municipality to form a legal team to support victims and the family. Mosaico warned it would consider legal action if no satisfactory response is received within seven days.
The Israel Police responded that the operation was conducted due to suspicion of weapons use and pledged to continue firm action against gunfire at weddings. They have not yet replied to Mosaico's formal demands. Separately, a similar incident occurred recently in southern Israel where a bride and groom were detained en route to their wedding for allegedly disrupting traffic. The couple blamed National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who defended the crackdown on reckless wedding convoys and gunfire.
