IDF Opens 18 Rape Investigations in 2024 Amid Rising Awareness and Abuse Charges

Since the start of 2024, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have opened 18 investigations into rape cases, marking an increase of approximately 6 to 8 cases compared to previous years. Nearly half (47%) of the suspects are conscripted soldiers, with most incidents occurring at training bases early in military service. The IDF emphasized it treats every complaint with full seriousness and attributes the rise in reports to increased awareness of sexual assault issues.

Earlier this month, seven soldiers from a combat engineering unit were indicted for severe abuse of younger soldiers. The charges detail a prolonged pattern of physical and psychological violence, systematic humiliation, and health damage, described as "Pazm games" within the company. The abuse involved enforcing unofficial "company rules" that prohibited expressions of fatigue or complaints, with punishments for violations including violent beatings and lashings with weapon barrels. Victims suffered bruises and back injuries but often refrained from seeking medical help out of fear of further violence.

These developments highlight ongoing challenges within the IDF regarding soldier welfare and discipline. The military continues to investigate and prosecute such cases to address misconduct and protect soldiers during their service.
