IDF Investigates After Detainees Marked with Numbers on Foreheads in West Bank Operation

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) responded on Tuesday evening to footage showing detainees in the village of Kafr Qabatiya, south of Jenin, marked with numbers on their foreheads and bodies during a military operation. The operation targeted two wanted suspects accused of planning attacks. According to the IDF, around 100 buildings were searched, militants were arrested, and additional suspects were interrogated.

Regarding the marking of detainees, the IDF stated that security forces involved in the operation within the Menashe Brigade area marked suspects during field interrogations. Commanders have since emphasized the severity of this action to their troops and have drawn the necessary lessons from the incident.

MK Ahmad Tibi, who shared the footage on his X (formerly Twitter) account, condemned the practice as "shocking and disgusting," describing it as a form of dehumanization that reduces individuals to numbers. He warned that such images evoke dark historical periods and should alarm everyone.

The IDF's acknowledgment of the incident and commitment to learning from it comes amid ongoing tensions and military operations in the West Bank, where security forces frequently conduct raids to prevent attacks. The case highlights concerns about detainee treatment and human rights during such operations.
