Religious Zionist Rabbis Honor Rabbi Dov Lior as He Steps Down Due to Health
Senior rabbis of the Religious Zionist community held a special Zoom meeting on Monday to honor Rabbi Dov Lior upon his retirement as president of the "Torat HaAretz HaTova" organization due to health reasons. During the gathering, the rabbis expressed gratitude for Rabbi Lior's leadership and significant influence on the community and younger generations over the years. Rabbi Lior addressed the rabbis, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the Jewish people and their connection to the Land of Israel. He stated, "Anyone who wants to save the Jewish people must not relinquish any part of the land to foreign rule. The Land of Israel belongs solely to the Jewish people." He urged rabbis to follow the teachings of Rabbi Kook, who proclaimed over a century ago that the time of redemption is approaching despite challenges, highlighting divine providence over the people and the land.
Rabbi Lior encouraged his colleagues to continue their efforts despite difficulties, saying, "Those with deep faith know that although there are hardships, we are on the right path. The Land of Israel is acquired through suffering." He expressed hope that perhaps in their generation, they will witness the entire Land of Israel united, invoking the halachic principle "safek de'oraita lechumra" (doubt in Torah law is ruled stringently) regarding border uncertainties. Rabbi Zalman Melamed, head of Beit El Yeshiva and a longtime acquaintance of Rabbi Lior, praised him as a pioneer in recognizing the processes of redemption in modern times and noted the strong love among rabbis despite occasional disagreements.
Looking ahead, Rabbi Isser Klonsky and Rabbi David Hai HaCohen are expected to join the presidency of "Torat HaAretz HaTova," alongside Rabbi Yaakov Ariel, continuing the organization's leadership and mission.
