Netanyahu Plans Move to Push Economy Minister Nir Barkat Down Likud List
The controversy over the Likud primary results continues, now focusing on Economy Minister Nir Barkat's position on the party list. Political analyst Amit Segal reports that Barkat is expected to finish in 24th place, the last realistic spot for candidates on the national list. However, Segal notes this ranking does not guarantee Barkat a secure seat in the next Knesset.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a history of managing candidates he views as problematic who land in borderline positions. Segal recalls the 2009 elections when Netanyahu used a unique procedural interpretation to remove Moshe Feiglin from a realistic spot on the list.
Currently, a similar scenario may unfold through Netanyahu's power to reserve slots on the list. If Netanyahu chooses to reserve the 24th spot for an external candidate, such as Tikva Hadasha member Michel Buskila, Barkat could be pushed down to 32nd place, effectively removing him from a viable position to enter the Knesset.
