Unidentified Airstrikes Target Military Base Near Turkey-Syria Border
Several airstrikes were carried out overnight in northwestern Syria, approximately 70 kilometers from the Turkish border, according to multiple reports. The strikes targeted the runway and landing strip of a military base located in the eastern rural area of Idlib. Information about the event remains limited, and Syrian authorities have not issued an official response. Arab media outlets reported that the attacks were conducted by unidentified fighter jets. The Lebanese Al Mayadeen channel, affiliated with Hezbollah, suggested Israel might be responsible, though no confirmation has come from Israeli sources or other regional reports. Consequently, the identity of the attacker remains unclear at this time.
The Abu al-Duhur airbase, east of Idlib city and tens of kilometers from the Turkish border, has changed hands multiple times during the Syrian civil war. Rebel forces captured it in 2015 after a prolonged siege, and it returned to Bashar al-Assad’s regime control in early 2018. In November 2024, rebels regained control during an offensive that contributed to the regime's collapse. Since Assad's fall, the area has been under the control of the new Syrian government led by Ahmad al-Shara. No reliable reports have emerged regarding casualties or the extent of damage to the runway and facilities at the airbase so far.
