Israeli MK Urges Immediate Action to Protect Chabad House in Sri Lanka Amid Rising Tensions

Israeli Member of Knesset Avi Maoz has issued a urgent warning to Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar regarding escalating tensions and a recent attack on the Chabad House in Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka. Maoz called for immediate intervention with Sri Lankan authorities to ensure the safety of Chabad emissaries and Israeli citizens in the area, emphasizing the need to act "before there are any casualties or property damage."

In his letter sent on Monday, Maoz highlighted the vital role Chabad Houses play worldwide, especially in locations lacking official Israeli representation, serving as essential support centers for Israelis and Jews abroad. He stressed Israel's responsibility to protect these emissaries so they can continue their important work securely.

The warning follows local protests over the weekend by Sri Lankan residents and Buddhist monks demanding the closure of the newly opened Chabad House, accusing Israelis of "occupying our lands." This unrest has heightened concerns about the safety of Israelis and Jewish visitors in the region.

Maoz's appeal underscores the urgency of diplomatic engagement to prevent further deterioration of the situation and safeguard Israeli interests and personnel in Sri Lanka.
