Southern Israel Yeshiva 'Ner Zerach Otzem' Resumes Studies After Safety Approval

After weeks of uncertainty and a four-day delay, approximately 250 students returned to study at the 'Ner Zerach Otzem' yeshiva in the Otzem moshav in southern Israel on Monday. The reopening followed an official approval from the Southern District Fire and Rescue Commander, who authorized the continuation of studies under strict adherence to safety regulations and ongoing installation of required safety measures. This decision came after professional and legal evaluations by district authorities.

The closure originated from a local fire caused by sparks during minor construction work aimed at addressing space shortages. Subsequent inspections revealed safety violations, leading to a closure order for the yeshiva complex. During the interim, the yeshiva administration engaged an external fire safety expert, completed necessary repairs, and underwent further inspections to meet safety standards.

In response to the closure, yeshiva leaders, supervisors, and students held a prayer event at the gravesite of Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman in Bnei Brak, reciting Psalms and special prayers for the reopening and success in resolving the issue. The announcement of the reopening brought relief and excitement, especially among first-year students uncertain about the start of their studies.

The yeshiva's head, Rabbi Yitzchak Ze'ev Feinstein, is scheduled to deliver the opening lesson for the Elul study period at 4:30 PM, focusing on the Talmudic tractate Makkot. This incident is part of a broader pattern in recent years, where several Haredi educational institutions faced closure orders due to serious safety violations, including a recent closure of the Tchernobil yeshiva in Elad for severe safety hazards threatening student lives.
