Israeli Police Foil Assassination Attempt in Southern Israel, Arrest Three Suspects
In a dramatic incident in southern Israel on August 17, 2026, two Arab men from Rahat, Anas Alataika (22) and Mohammed Abu Sidra (25), attempted an assassination by opening fire on a vehicle after blocking it near a police patrol car. Upon noticing the police, Alataika fired at the officers, who returned fire and pursued the suspects. The suspects escaped after damaging a police vehicle tire and fled back to Rahat.
Police investigation intensified when a woman, Anour Alataika (29) from Rahat, reported a stolen car that matched the description of the suspects' getaway vehicle. The car was found in a repair shop, and secret phone surveillance revealed that Anour had informed another person about the car's location. Subsequent arrests of Abu Sidra and Anas Alataika were followed by Anour's arrest about ten days later.
While in custody, Anas Alataika unknowingly confessed details of the attack to an undercover police informant, strengthening the case. Evidence includes audio recordings, security footage showing the shooting and vehicle blocking, DNA reports from the crime scene, and other forensic findings.
The Southern District Prosecutor's Office, led by Attorney Orly Pitusi, filed charges against the three suspects in the Beersheba District Court. They face accusations of attempted murder, aggravated assault, weapons offenses, false reporting to police, and obstruction of justice. The prosecution has requested extended detention due to concerns over potential flight risk and interference with the investigation.
