Ariel City Hall Seeks Court Order to Complete Selection of City Rabbi
The municipality of Ariel has filed an administrative petition demanding that the long-delayed process of choosing the city’s rabbi be completed immediately. The petition was submitted against the Interior Ministry and the Civil Administration’s Judea and Samaria district commissioner after months of delays, even though the city says it has met all required procedures.
According to Ariel officials, the city council selected the public representatives for the election committee several months ago, and all requested clarifications and documents were sent to the relevant state authorities. Despite that, no decision has yet been issued to allow the process to move forward. The city is asking the court to order the authorities to advance the selection without any further delay.
The petition argues that the issue affects tens of thousands of residents and that a central city like Ariel is entitled to receive the public and religious institutions and services available in other cities across Israel. Mayor Yair Shitbon said Ariel is the “capital of Samaria,” a growing regional center serving residents from across the area, and said the city had worked “responsibly” and “in full cooperation” with every requirement. He said the court request is meant to end a prolonged period of waiting and reach a decision quickly.
