Ariel Mayor Criticizes Political Delay in Appointing City Rabbi
Ya'ir Shitbon, the mayor of Ariel, sharply criticized the ongoing delay in appointing a city rabbi, describing the situation as a purely political issue rather than a professional one. In an interview with Channel 7, Shitbon explained that the city has completed all required steps, including professional approvals and city council votes, but the process has stalled at the final stage without explanation. He accused the Ministry of Religious Services, specifically Minister Yariv Levin, of causing the delay due to internal political primaries, despite the ministry's legal and administrative officials confirming the city followed all proper procedures.
Shitbon also addressed a petition filed by the city to the Supreme Court, clarifying that the court did not reject Ariel's claims but instructed the city to exhaust administrative channels first. The city continues to pursue legal action while simultaneously pushing for the appointment. He emphasized that having a city rabbi is not a symbolic issue but a vital public need, providing essential religious services such as marriage, circumcision, funerals, and community connection.
Highlighting Ariel's growth, with approved plans for 18,000 new housing units, Shitbon argued that the delay contradicts the city's status and development. He criticized Minister Levin, a right-wing official expected to support settlement communities, for harming the settlement by withholding the appointment. Shitbon concluded that after many years without a city rabbi, Ariel deserves to have one appointed promptly.
