Yoaz Hendel Demands National Security Ministry in Next Israeli Government
Yoaz Hendel, former Communications Minister and chairman of the Zionist Home party, has identified securing the Ministry of National Security as a key goal for his party in the upcoming Israeli government. In a radio interview on 103FM on Monday, Hendel emphasized his party's ambition to become a significant force in the next Knesset, stating, "We may not be the largest party in Israel, but we will be the most important." He stressed the need for change following the events of October 7, rejecting a return to previous policies.
Hendel specifically expressed interest in the National Security portfolio, criticizing the current government's handling of internal security, particularly in the Negev region where he claims there is a lack of effective governance. He warned of the risk of fragmentation into autonomous regions, accusing the government of focusing on social media appearances rather than real security measures.
This demand is consistent with Hendel's earlier statements during the launch of the "Zionist Home, Reservists" campaign, where he described internal security as Israel's "eighth front" and a domain where the country is losing ground. Additionally, Hendel used the interview to criticize the Likud party amid its primary elections, urging members to leave what he called a party of "much talk and no action," positioning his party as a viable alternative.
