Iran Hardens Stance Amid US Economic Pressure as Revolutionary Guards Consolidate Power

Amid ongoing US economic sanctions and stalled negotiations, Iran is intensifying its hardline positions, with the Revolutionary Guards effectively controlling the country, according to Professor Uzi Rabi. Speaking on 103FM on August 16, 2026, Rabi highlighted a growing divide within Iran between those fronting negotiations and the actual power holders, the Revolutionary Guards, who are appointing increasingly dogmatic officials and sharpening the regime's stance rather than softening it.

Rabi explained that despite severe economic blows, the Iranian regime remains entrenched, fearing internal rebellion more than external threats. This fear influences the promotion of officials whose careers are marked by harsh repression of the Iranian public. The Revolutionary Guards, he said, are the real power brokers, managing the state’s affairs and maintaining the existing political structure, even as Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s influence appears limited due to health issues.

The expert also noted that Gulf states are reassessing their long-standing security assumptions, increasingly doubting the reliability of the US security umbrella. The Gulf countries are questioning the value of hosting American bases, as they perceive Iran, despite its difficulties, as capable of disrupting their stability. Rabi emphasized that Gulf states recognize they may have to coexist with the current Iranian regime, which continues to exert influence and control.

While supporting economic pressure on Iran, Rabi expressed skepticism about the West's ability to sustain consistent sanctions over time. He urged for strategic patience and consistency, qualities he doubts are present in the current US administration under Donald Trump. Rabi also suggested that Israel should consider how to position itself amid the shifting alliances and risks in the region, as multiple new alliances are forming and countries seek to minimize their vulnerabilities.
