Montreal Impact Suspends Fans Indefinitely Over Antisemitic Incident Against Israeli Player

Two weeks after an antisemitic incident during an MLS match between Montreal Impact and New England Revolution, Montreal has taken decisive action against the offending fans by suspending them indefinitely. The incident occurred when two fans shouted antisemitic chants at Israeli player Dor Turgeman after he scored his fourth goal of the season in a 2-2 draw. The club also revoked privileges from fan organizations and indefinitely restricted access to the section from which the chants originated ahead of their recent 1-1 draw against D.C. United.

In an official statement, Montreal Impact condemned antisemitism, racism, and hate, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in their stadium or community. The club apologized to New England and others affected and pledged to identify and permanently ban anyone involved in discriminatory conduct. The incident escalated on the field when Montreal goalkeeper Sebastian Breza pushed Turgeman, leading to a confrontation between players and intervention by the referee.

Turgeman expressed pride in his Israeli identity and said he would react the same way again despite the hostility, noting that such antisemitic abuse was unique to Canada and not experienced in U.S. games. Breza explained his actions as an attempt to energize the crowd and support his teammates. Montreal’s firm response highlights ongoing efforts to combat hate speech in sports environments.
