Montreal Soccer Club Bans Fans for Anti-Semitic Abuse Against Dor Turgeman

Earlier this month, Israeli soccer player Dor Turgeman scored in a 2-2 draw against Montreal and deliberately celebrated in front of opposing fans who had been shouting anti-Semitic slurs, including "Death to Israel," throughout the match. During the incident, Turgeman was pushed by the opposing goalkeeper and had bottles thrown at him from the stands.

Following an investigation by Major League Soccer (MLS) in cooperation with the Montreal club, the team announced an indefinite ban on two individuals responsible for throwing objects and violating the league's fan conduct code. Additionally, official supporter groups had their privileges suspended ahead of Montreal's next game against D.C. United, and the rights of the fan section involved were suspended indefinitely.

Montreal FC issued a strong statement condemning all forms of anti-Semitism, racism, and hatred, apologizing deeply to the New England Revolution organization and anyone affected by the unacceptable behavior. The club emphasized ongoing efforts to identify further offenders and pledged permanent bans for anyone found participating in discriminatory conduct.

The club also highlighted its collaboration with local Jewish community organizations and its commitment to expanding anti-discrimination initiatives, increasing awareness, direct dialogue with fans, and enhanced security measures at Saputo Stadium. The statement stressed that hateful speech harms not only the targeted player but also teammates, fans, families, staff, and the broader community, underscoring a shared responsibility to oppose hatred and foster a safe, respectful environment for all.

The MLS league continues to support these measures to ensure stadiums remain welcoming spaces for players, fans, employees, and guests from all backgrounds.
