Israeli Attorney General Conditions Ultra-Orthodox School Funding on Core Curriculum Compliance

The Israeli Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, responded to the Supreme Court regarding petitions about the funding of ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) education networks. She stated that continued government funding for these schools is contingent upon their fulfillment of basic obligations, including full adherence to the official core curriculum as defined by the Ministry of Education. These requirements are to be enforced starting from the current academic year.

Baharav-Miara highlighted significant gaps in the ultra-Orthodox schools' compliance with teaching the full core curriculum, based on Ministry of Education data. She also pointed out deficiencies in the ability to monitor and enforce these obligations effectively.

Beyond curriculum requirements, the Attorney General emphasized additional conditions for the Haredi education networks: employing properly qualified teaching staff, full participation in assessment and evaluation systems, cooperation with oversight and enforcement bodies, and meeting reporting obligations. These measures aim to ensure accountability and educational standards within the ultra-Orthodox school system.
