Israeli Military Commentator Says IDF Warning Projected Weakness
Yossi Yehoshua, the military analyst for Yedioth Ahronoth and i24NEWS, sharply criticized Israel’s public messaging on Sunday evening after the defense guidelines were changed and high alert was issued over the possibility of direct Iranian fire.
Yehoshua argued that the political leadership made a mistake by leaving the communication effort to the IDF Spokesperson alone, without pairing it with a clear offensive deterrence message directed at Tehran. He said the government should have made clear that any Iranian fire would be met with a severe response.
According to Yehoshua, the combination of the IDF Spokesperson’s warning about a possible imminent attack and Home Front Command restrictions on public gatherings across the country created a troubling message to the other side because it was not backed by a firm political statement. “The IDF Spokesperson’s announcement had to be accompanied by a clear political statement that any fire from Iran would be met with a severe response,” he said.
He concluded that leaving the IDF Spokesperson’s announcement on its own “projects weakness and a defensive mindset,” warning that this affects both domestic morale and how the enemy reads Israel’s posture.
