New Israeli Parties Risk Losing Votes by Failing to Pass Electoral Threshold in 2026

Ahead of Israel's 26th Knesset elections, new political parties led by figures such as Gilad Erdan, Yuli Edelstein, Yoaz Hendel, Hili Tropper, Benny Gantz, and Michal Shmueli face a critical challenge: avoiding the fate of many small parties in the 2022 elections that failed to cross the electoral threshold. In the previous 25th Knesset elections, approximately 418,000 votes were lost because numerous parties did not meet the minimum percentage required to enter the Knesset.

The proliferation of small parties is partly due to the relatively low barrier to registering a new party, which costs about 37,000 shekels for registration and mandatory newspaper advertisement. Once registered, these parties can participate in elections without further obligations, receive ballot letters, and gain campaign airtime.

Political analysts advise that new parties should consider forming joint lists rather than splitting into smaller factions. Such fragmentation often leads to disappointment among voters and wasted resources, as many small parties fail to secure enough votes to enter the Knesset. The lesson from the 2022 elections is clear: cooperation among new parties can prevent significant vote loss and increase their chances of parliamentary representation.
