Samsung Rolls Out August 2026 Security Update First to Galaxy Watch 5 Pro

Samsung has begun distributing its August 2026 security update for the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, marking a surprising choice as the first device to receive it. Instead of starting with the latest Galaxy Watch 9 series or the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, the company prioritized the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, a model launched about four years ago. Initially, the update is available for the non-cellular version of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro in South Korea, with firmware version R920XXS2DZG3 and a download size of approximately 147.29 MB.

This update does not introduce new features or interface changes but focuses on security, addressing 56 vulnerabilities found in previous software versions. Samsung presents the update as a patch package aimed at reducing system weaknesses rather than a feature upgrade. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro remains on Samsung's official list of wearable devices eligible for periodic security updates, alongside models such as the Galaxy Watch 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and Ultra series.

The update rollout sequence is unusual, as Samsung typically begins with newer or premium products before extending updates to older generations. This time, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro update precedes those for the Galaxy Watch 9, Galaxy Watch 8, and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, which are still awaiting the same security patch. Samsung notes that Wear OS updates for Galaxy watches include fixes from Google as well as Samsung-specific patches, with timing varying by model, country, and device version.

Users with the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro can check for the update via the Galaxy Wearable app on their phones by navigating to the watch's software update settings. The update is expected to expand to additional countries in the coming days, though Samsung has not provided a detailed global schedule yet.
