Jewish Worker in Berlin Finds Anti-Semitic Graffiti in Prayer Book Purchased from Jewish Store

A worker at the German-Jewish organization "Werta Initiative" in Berlin purchased a Jewish prayer book in preparation for the High Holidays from a Jewish bookstore in the city. Upon opening the book at home, he discovered anti-Semitic graffiti inside, including the words "Hitler" and "Free Palestine," alongside a drawing of a male genitalia. The worker, who wished to remain anonymous, told the German Jewish newspaper Jüdische Allgemeine that he found the offensive inscriptions last Monday while leafing through the book. He expressed confusion and distress over how such hateful messages could have been inserted into a prayer book.

The following day, he contacted the bookstore to report the incident. Staff at the store appeared genuinely concerned. The worker noted that another book he ordered from the same store arrived undamaged, leading to suspicions that the defacement occurred before the book reached the store. The bookstore confirmed that the prayer book was delivered to them without packaging, which could have allowed someone to vandalize it unnoticed. Due to these circumstances, the worker has chosen not to publicly disclose the bookstore’s name at this time.

This incident has heightened fears within Germany’s Jewish community amid a rise in anti-Semitic acts, especially in spaces associated with Jewish life. The discovery of hateful graffiti in a religious text purchased from a Jewish establishment underscores ongoing concerns about the safety and respect for Jewish institutions in Germany.
