US Supports Turkey's Growing Role in Lebanon to Counterbalance Israel
Turkey is expanding its involvement in Lebanon with tacit approval from US President Donald Trump, who views Ankara as a key regional player to counterbalance Israel. This strategy includes agreements with Hezbollah, mediation with Syria, energy projects, and the potential deployment of Turkish forces in southern Lebanon to replace the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission, which is set to end on December 31, 2026.
Tensions escalated after Lebanese leader Ahmad al-Shara demanded the extradition of Hezbollah members accused of crimes in Syria, but Turkish intervention helped de-escalate the situation. Hezbollah, traditionally wary of regional rivals, now sees Turkey as a necessary ally to deter Syrian intervention and provide some protection against Israel. However, Hezbollah recognizes that a sustainable peace deal with Israel will require a security guarantor, a role Turkey could fulfill as a NATO member.
Opposition groups in Lebanon also welcome Turkey's increased influence as a counterweight to Iranian dominance and a preferable alternative to direct Syrian involvement, which could reignite sectarian conflicts. Turkey's growing regional stature is further bolstered by recent cooperation with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, positioning it as a complementary force rather than a competitor to Saudi influence.
Beyond security, Turkey is engaging in Lebanon's energy and infrastructure sectors, challenging existing maritime border agreements Lebanon made with Cyprus and Syria without consulting Ankara. Proposals include supplying electricity to Lebanon via Syria or through an undersea cable from Turkey to northern Lebanon. Turkey has also expressed willingness to assist in rebuilding southern Lebanon, potentially deepening its economic footprint.
Analysts predict that Turkey will become a central actor in Lebanon's political, security, and economic arenas in the coming months, shaping the balance of power against Iran, Syria, and Israel. This development reflects a US strategy under Trump to restrain Israel indirectly by empowering Turkey as a regional counterbalance.
