Australian Man Sets World Record with 2,253 First Names
Laurence Watkins, an Australian man, has entered Guinness World Records for the longest first name in the world, with 2,253 given names. According to the report, he began pursuing an unusual record in 1990 after reading the entire Guinness Book of World Records and deciding to find a category he could win.
Watkins legally changed his name and added thousands of names. He collected them from books available at the city library where he worked in Australia, and sometimes got help from colleagues who suggested unusual and distinctive names. The change was eventually made official in legal documents.
The record brought him fame, but also practical problems in daily life. In one case, when he got married, the officiant had to recite his full name for about 20 minutes so the ceremony would be legally valid.
Watkins says the huge number of names remains difficult even years later. He admitted he still cannot pronounce all 2,253 of them, but says he remains proud of holding such a unique world record.
