Officer Convicted of Sexual Assault on Soldiers Released After One Year

Reserve Captain Ofir Menachem, convicted of sexually assaulting two female soldiers under his command, was released after serving only 12 months in prison. Menachem was originally sentenced to 22 months, which was reduced to 18 months following an appeal. Despite the reduction, his early release has sparked outrage. One of the victims, Noa Rothschild, criticized the parole board's decision, stating that the punishment she endures is lifelong and that she fought a long, exhausting battle for her assault to be recognized. Rothschild condemned the state for providing Menachem with all the support needed for rehabilitation while denying her even the time to recover on her own. She emphasized that the state cannot expect victims to report crimes if it then eases the burden on perpetrators.
