IDF Admits Avoiding Evictions of Illegal West Bank Outposts Amid Rising Nationalist Crime

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged refraining from evacuating illegal outposts in the West Bank during the first half of 2026, as nationalist crime incidents surged. Between January and June 2026, there were 660 nationalist crime events in the West Bank, marking a 63% increase compared to the second half of 2025 and a 50% rise from the first half of 2025. Concurrently, targeted attacks against Israeli security forces rose to 45 incidents, up 50% from the previous half-year period.

The violence has resulted in 140 Palestinian casualties and six fatalities in the first half of 2026, representing a 70% increase in injuries compared to the latter half of 2025. The IDF attributes the decision to avoid outpost evacuations to operational strain and the need to prevent further clashes, particularly with extremist Jewish activists. Military orders have been issued to restrict access to certain villages, allowing only residents entry, with authorities empowered to detain non-residents violating these orders.

The IDF reports over 100 new illegal outposts constructed recently across the West Bank, complicating security efforts. Resources that could have been deployed against Palestinian terrorism, as well as operations in Gaza and Lebanon, are being diverted to manage the rising nationalist crime and illegal settlement activity. Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and Major General Avi Blot have emphasized the operational challenges posed by this surge in violence and unauthorized settlement expansion.
