Former Shin Bet Chief Yoram Cohen Criticizes David Zini and Calls for State Inquiry

Yoram Cohen, former head of Israel's Shin Bet security agency, delivered a rare public critique of David Zini on 103FM radio on August 10, 2026. Cohen condemned Israel's dependence on the United States for critical security decisions, describing the situation as "sad" and warning that Israel risks becoming a client state both in the north and south. He called for a strategic shift in Israel's relationship with the U.S. and urged the adoption of more realistic security solutions.

Cohen also announced plans to visit the Golan Heights and the northern community of Gesher Ziv to engage with residents and discuss initiatives aimed at strengthening the region, which he said has been neglected. He praised Gadi Eizenkot, chairman of the Yisrael! party, for pledging to establish a state commission of inquiry as the first act of his prospective government. Cohen emphasized the necessity of such an inquiry to investigate the failures that led to a recent severe massacre and to prevent future tragedies.

Regarding David Zini's performance, Cohen expressed concerns about "cracks" in some of Zini's decisions, particularly criticizing his public statements and security measures. He specifically questioned the extent of security provided to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's family, suggesting a distinction should be made between the prime minister and his relatives. Cohen's remarks reflect growing tensions over Israel's security policies and leadership ahead of the 2026 elections.
