Doctors Warn Kiwi Can Trigger Serious Allergic Reactions Beyond Mild Irritation
Kiwi fruit, rich in vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, can cause mild to severe allergic reactions in some individuals, according to Dr. Itai Gal. While many experience only a tingling or burning sensation in the mouth due to the enzyme actinidin and tiny calcium oxalate crystals in the fruit, others may develop more serious symptoms. These include throat swelling, difficulty breathing, vomiting, and widespread rash, which require immediate medical attention.
Dr. Gal explains that kiwi allergy is particularly common among children and those with other allergies, sometimes linked to oral allergy syndrome where the immune system confuses kiwi proteins with pollen or latex proteins. Children reporting burning or itching after eating kiwi should not be ignored, and repeated reactions warrant consultation with a pediatrician or allergist. Avoiding the fruit until proper diagnosis is advised.
People allergic to latex may also react to kiwi, bananas, and avocados due to protein similarities, though not all latex-allergic individuals react to kiwi and vice versa. Distinguishing between mild irritation and dangerous allergic responses is crucial. Persistent or worsening symptoms, especially involving breathing or digestion, should never be dismissed as normal acidity.
Those diagnosed with significant kiwi allergy should receive clear medical guidance, including whether to carry an epinephrine injector. In cases of severe reactions such as shortness of breath, throat swelling, extreme weakness, or fainting, urgent medical care is essential. For most people, kiwi remains a safe and nutritious fruit, but awareness of its allergenic potential is important to prevent serious health risks.
