Israeli Influencer Experiences Severe Lip Swelling from Mosquito Bite, Experts Explain Allergy Risks
Hen Migirov, an Israeli social media influencer, suffered an unusually severe allergic reaction after a single mosquito bite caused her lips to swell significantly, making it difficult for her to leave her home. In a video she shared online, Migirov described herself as "allergic to mosquitoes" and recounted how the swelling was so extreme she had never experienced anything like it before. She later appeared on ynet's studio to discuss her experience alongside Dr. Yosef Pansof, an allergy and immunology specialist at Clalit’s Lin Medical Center.
Migirov explained that although she had always known she was sensitive to mosquito bites, this reaction was unprecedented. The bite occurred on her lip, a soft tissue area prone to more pronounced local swelling. Dr. Pansof clarified that while allergic reactions to mosquito bites are recognized, they are neither very common nor life-threatening like bee or wasp stings. He emphasized that the swelling is usually a localized exaggerated response rather than a systemic allergy.
Dr. Pansof noted the limitations in current diagnostic tools for mosquito bite allergies, as the specific allergens have not been fully characterized, unlike bee or wasp venom. Diagnosis mainly relies on clinical history, and such reactions are more frequent in young children but tend to diminish with age. Treatment focuses on prevention using mosquito repellents and early intervention with antihistamines. In cases of significant swelling in sensitive areas like lips or eyes, medical evaluation is advised, and short courses of steroids may be prescribed under supervision.
Migirov shared that her doctor prescribed basic allergy medication, which improved her condition within a day. She now takes extra precautions during mosquito season, including using repellents and sleeping with a mosquito net. Dr. Pansof recommended that individuals with known mosquito allergies maintain a treatment plan with their physician and keep antihistamines on hand, with the option of increased doses if needed. He also highlighted the importance of seeking medical care if breathing difficulties or severe swelling occur.
This case underscores the need for awareness about mosquito bite allergies, especially during summer months when exposure increases, and the importance of prompt treatment to reduce discomfort and prevent complications.
