Melissa Barrera Stands by Gaza War Posts Despite Career Fallout

Actress Melissa Barrera, who was fired from the film "Scream 7" after posting critical comments about Israel's actions in Gaza, says she does not regret her statements. In a recent interview on the public radio show "Latino USA," Barrera discussed the professional consequences she faced, including fewer job opportunities and a period of isolation. She described her firing in November 2023 as part of a broader entertainment industry trend where people are dismissed for supporting Palestinian human rights. Barrera had called Israel's military actions "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing" on Instagram, which led to her dismissal and the loss of her representation agency.

Barrera emphasized that her posts addressed the war, not antisemitism, although the production company Spyglass Media Group stated it has zero tolerance for antisemitism or hate speech. Despite the setbacks, Barrera has shifted her focus to theater and currently stars as Rose in the Broadway musical "Titanique," a parody of the film "Titanic." The show, nominated for four Tony Awards including Best Musical, was recently extended through September 20. However, Barrera announced she lost her voice during a performance and had to miss several shows to recover, underscoring the physical demands of her current work. She encouraged listening to one’s body and expressed no shame in taking time to heal.
