The independent action film Citizen Vigilante, directed by German filmmaker Ove Boll and starring former Hollywood poster boy Armie Hammer, has sparked heated debate worldwide. Despite harsh critical reviews and a ban in Germany due to its violent and xenophobic narrative targeting immigrants, the film found a strong conservative audience, including billionaire Elon Musk, who streamed it for free to his 240 million followers on X. The film, made on a modest $2 million budget, topped Amazon's download charts and holds a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Citizen Vigilante follows Sanders, a businessman living in Europe, who embarks on a violent vigilante crusade after authorities fail to protect his stabbed mother from immigrant attackers. Hammer, who faced serious sexual assault allegations that were eventually dropped due to lack of evidence, was cast by Boll to revive his career. Boll defended the casting as a "win-win" for both, emphasizing Hammer's charisma and need for work after Hollywood rejection.

Israeli actress Hila Harush, known for her role in the series Zaguri Empire, plays a small but significant role as a Muslim girl whose brother and his friends sexually assault a local girl, with the court showing leniency due to their difficult immigration backgrounds. Harush described the moral complexity of her role and the tension on set, especially given the political climate in Europe during filming in Zagreb, Croatia, in early 2025. She recounted initial fears about being an Israeli on set but found her co-actors, many immigrants themselves, welcoming and supportive.

Boll, labeled "the worst director in the world" by critics, insists the film reflects real European crime statistics and is not intended as hate speech, though German courts disagreed. The film’s violent and xenophobic themes have drawn widespread condemnation, but also praise from some conservative circles. Boll plans a sequel for 2027 and expressed interest in casting other controversial actors like Kevin Spacey.

Harush emphasized her pride in participating in an international production and noted the professional similarities between working on this independent film and larger Hollywood sets.
