MK Michal Waldiger Criticizes Givat Shmuel Mayor Over Ongoing Yeshiva Funding Crisis
MK Michal Waldiger of the Religious Zionist Party has publicly condemned Givat Shmuel Mayor Yossi Brodny amid a funding and operational crisis at the Bnei Akiva Yeshiva in the city. Waldiger, a former city council member and longtime resident of Givat Shmuel, responded to a letter from the yeshiva head Rabbi Shraga Prochter, who described the severe impact of the dispute between the municipality and the Bnei Akiva network on the yeshiva's ability to prepare for the upcoming school year. Rabbi Prochter revealed that the yeshiva did not receive customary municipal support for summer renovations and that funding for programs assisting students with academic and emotional challenges might be discontinued. He also highlighted the personal toll the ongoing conflict has taken on him, stating his "strength is waning" and warning of potential financial and educational consequences if the situation remains unresolved.
Waldiger criticized Mayor Brodny for allegedly prioritizing national political ambitions over local responsibilities, referencing his affiliation with the Israel Beiteinu party. She urged Brodny to end the dispute promptly and prioritize the welfare of Givat Shmuel’s children and educational institutions, emphasizing that the city is not a stepping stone for political careers but a home for its residents. Waldiger called on the mayor to convene all parties involved to resolve the crisis and manage the city effectively.
The conflict centers on disagreements over land and building issues rather than educational content, but its repercussions are directly affecting the yeshiva’s operations and students. Rabbi Prochter noted that the Bnei Akiva network has allocated 300,000 shekels for renovations, with a commitment to raise an additional 200,000 shekels. The letter, published last week, serves as a stark warning that without immediate resolution, the yeshiva may have to consider further actions before the school year begins.
