Four-Year-Old Left Behind at Ben Gurion Airport While Family Flies to Paris
In the summer of 2008, a family traveling from Ben Gurion Airport to Paris accidentally left their four-and-a-half-year-old daughter behind. Amid the rush and stress of boarding their Sun D'Or flight, the parents and four of their children boarded the plane with 18 suitcases, unaware that their youngest child had not boarded. Approximately 40 minutes after takeoff, the parents realized their daughter was missing, while she was found wandering alone near the duty-free fountain at the airport, asking security where her parents were.
Passengers alerted officer Lior Ohayon, who tried to comfort the child and help her identify her family in the crowd. Despite announcements over the airport system, no one came to retrieve her. Officer Sarit Ben-Eden entered the parents' names into the border control system and confirmed they were on the flight to Paris. Attempts to stop the plane failed as it had already departed. The child was taken to the police station, where she provided her parents' names.
The airline and airport authorities were notified, and the flight crew contacted the parents, who initially believed the child was seated with the other parent. After realizing the mistake, the parents were shocked and distressed. Meanwhile, arrangements were made to fly the child to Paris on an El Al flight, accompanied by a crew member. Upon arrival, the family was reunited at Charles de Gaulle Airport.
The incident raised serious questions about airport procedures, including how six passengers boarded with seven boarding passes and why no staff noticed the missing child. The commander of Ben Gurion Airport police announced that the parents would be detained for investigation on suspicion of neglect. Sun D'Or and the Israel Airports Authority launched internal investigations to review boarding procedures. The airline's CEO described the event as an extremely rare failure and promised a thorough inquiry.
Beyond the procedural failures, the episode left a lasting image of a small child alone in a busy airport, holding a police officer's leg and asking the simplest question: "Where are my mom and dad?"
