Israeli Woman Survives 11 Days Lost in Zimbabwe Wildlife Reserve After Post-Army Trip

In January 2001, 21-year-old Yifat Mader from Rosh HaAyin set out on a post-army trip to Africa, choosing a less common destination compared to the popular South America or Southeast Asia routes. She traveled through Ethiopia and Malawi before arriving in Zimbabwe’s Chimanimani Nature Reserve, one of Africa’s largest and most scenic wildlife areas.

While hiking to a well-known mountain peak within the reserve, Yifat became disoriented during her descent as darkness fell. She spent the night outdoors near a large rock and resumed her trek at dawn, unknowingly heading in the wrong direction toward the Mozambique border. Ill-prepared for such an ordeal, she had packed only a clementine, some chocolate, limited water, and warm clothing, which proved crucial as she faced cold nights and persistent rain.

After two days without her return, fellow travelers alerted local authorities and the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Yifat’s family quickly organized a private search mission, joining local efforts involving police, military, helicopters, and community volunteers. Despite these extensive operations, she remained missing for 11 days.

During this time, Yifat survived mainly by relying on natural water sources and avoided eating wild plants due to poisoning fears. Eventually, she encountered local villagers who contacted park rangers, leading to her rescue in Mozambique, approximately 200 kilometers from where she had started. Though exhausted and scratched, she was physically unharmed.

Yifat later recounted sleeping under trees and rock crevices to shelter from rain, encountering monkeys and a large snake, and constantly hoping to avoid predators like the reserve’s famous leopards. Following her rescue, the Israeli ambassador hosted a celebratory meal. When Yifat expressed interest in visiting Namibia, her father firmly insisted they return home immediately, underscoring the ordeal’s severity.
