Three Israeli concerns over a U.S.-Iran understanding
A memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States is expected to be signed today, opening the Strait of Hormuz immediately and starting a 60-day period aimed at reaching a broader deal.
From Israel’s perspective, the first major problem is that Iran would regain the ability to export oil right away, bringing in an estimated $400 million to $500 million a day, without giving up anything substantive in return.
The second concern is nuclear: Iran has not agreed to destroy its enriched uranium or halt enrichment, and that issue is supposed to be addressed over the next 60 days.
The third issue is Iranian insistence on a total ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon. That could increase U.S. pressure on the IDF’s activity in southern Lebanon. According to the article, any Israeli agreement to withdraw or stop fighting would save Hezbollah and harm Israel’s negotiations with Lebanon.
