Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein Delivers Message of Hope at Great-Grandson’s Bar Mitzvah in Bnei Brak

Last week in Bnei Brak, the bar mitzvah celebration of Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein’s great-grandson, David Segal, took place. David is the son of Rabbi Yosef Halevi Segal, a prominent scholar at the Ponovezh Yeshiva, and grandson of Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Zilberstein. Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein, a member of the Council of Torah Sages and rabbi of the Ramat Elchanan neighborhood, attended and listened attentively to the bar mitzvah boy’s Torah discourse. The young celebrant discussed whether one should recite the Shehecheyanu blessing when acquiring new tefillin, concluding by citing his great-grandfather’s ruling that no blessing is traditionally said on tefillin, so he would bless on a new fruit instead to cover the new tefillin as well.

Following this, Rabbi Zilberstein addressed the assembled guests with words of encouragement relevant to the broader community. He acknowledged the uncertainty facing the Jewish people and their leaders, stating, “Our leaders themselves do not know what tomorrow will bring. But we do know that children like this one will protect us with all their might.” He praised the boy’s dedication to Torah and expressed blessings for the attendees.

Rabbi Zilberstein then recounted a story illustrating wisdom and calm in the face of communal frustration. On a holiday eve, many people from Bnei Brak were traveling to Jerusalem, but buses were overcrowded and not stopping at the final station, causing anger among waiting passengers. A wise bus driver, originally scheduled to drive from Bnei Brak to Tiberias, noticed the chaos and, with permission from his supervisor, changed his route to Bnei Brak to Jerusalem. This quick thinking averted conflict and earned him blessings from the crowd. Rabbi Zilberstein emphasized that true service to God involves using wisdom to transform anger into blessing.

He concluded by stressing the importance of sanctifying God’s name through proper conduct, refinement, and kindness, invoking the legacy of Rabbi Elishiv and other family elders. He expressed hope that the younger generation will grow in wisdom and continue to fulfill God’s will, ending with a prayer for blessing upon the entire Jewish people.
