IDF Approves Burial of Suspect Who Tried to Stab Officer in Lod Despite Police Opposition

The body of Sami Ben Ahmad Jesus, who was shot dead in Lod on July 1 after allegedly attempting to stab a police officer, has been released for burial after more than a month in the forensic institute. The release was approved by the IDF despite initial objections from the police and Shin Bet, who recommended delaying the burial due to the ongoing investigation.

The incident began when police received a report of a man holding a knife near a school in Lod. Police arrived quickly, but the suspect fled. During his escape, he encountered a unit of Yamam counter-terrorism fighters. According to police findings, Jesus ran toward one of the fighters with a knife, attempting to stab him. A struggle ensued, and fearing for the officer's life, the fighter shot Jesus, who was critically wounded and later died.

The funeral is scheduled for Wednesday night under heavy police security. Central District Police Commander Amir Cohen assigned the investigation to the Central Unit of the district. Police emphasized that the circumstances are still under investigation, including the possibility of a terror motive.

Following the release of the body, police met with Jesus's family to agree on funeral arrangements. Conditions and restrictions were set to prevent disturbances, incitement, or expressions of support for terrorism during the event. Lod Police Chief Midad Lavi is leading the preparations, with reinforced visible and covert forces deployed. Police have warned they will enforce zero tolerance for any violations to maintain public order and safety.
