Two Georgia teachers get long prison terms over sex abuse of same student
A private Christian school in Georgia, in the United States, has shut down permanently after two teachers were convicted in separate sex-abuse cases involving the same student. The scandal shook the local community and ended with severe prison sentences for both educators.
The central case involved Bonnie Brown, 27, the boy’s literature teacher. According to testimony, she began talking with him extensively on Snapchat, and the relationship escalated to sexual encounters in 2023, when he was 16. He told the court that Brown sexually assaulted him twice during his first year of high school, once at his aunt’s home and once at her own house. Brown’s defense tried to undermine the teen’s credibility and pointed to the fact that Snapchat messages are automatically deleted.
Prosecutors countered with an unusual piece of evidence, a detailed drawing the student made of Brown’s bedroom. He also stepped down from the witness stand to point out specific features he remembered from the room. The jury convicted Brown of illegal sexual contact by an educator. At sentencing, now 19, he addressed her in tears and said, “All you had to do was admit it,” adding that he had been bullied after the case became public. Brown was sentenced to 40 years, with 15 to serve in prison, and will have to register as a sex offender after release.
Weeks before Brown’s conviction, another teacher at the same school, 66-year-old Sheri Modlin, admitted that she had repeatedly had sex with the same student on multiple occasions. She argued that she had been going through a “dark period” in her life, but the court rejected that explanation and sentenced her to 25 years, with 12 to be served in prison. An assistant district attorney said the ruling sends a clear message that exploitative conduct against minors will not be tolerated. Through his lawyer, the student said the women abused their positions and that the school completely failed in its duty to supervise them and protect him.
