Gaza Residents Express Deep Despair Amid Skepticism Over Hamas Disarmament Deal

Despite reports of progress toward a new agreement concerning Gaza, local residents remain deeply skeptical about any real change. They describe ongoing chaos and repression under Hamas, which continues to suppress its opponents, and express frustration that both Hamas and Israel seem to be playing them without fulfilling commitments. One Gaza resident told N12, "We just want to get rid of this nightmare that has lasted three years," highlighting the persistent hardships despite talks and promises.

Many residents doubt Hamas will agree to disarm as proposed in the peace council's framework, which places Hamas's disarmament at the center of the negotiations. A female resident accused Hamas of deceit and evasive tactics, while also acknowledging Israeli military actions targeting Hamas operatives, which she described as precise and justified as long as civilians are unharmed.

Conversely, Ibrahim al-Madhoun, a Gaza analyst affiliated with Hamas, argued that the framework opens a path to ending the war, framing the weapons issue as a "Palestinian arrangement" rather than handing arms over to Israel. He criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for maneuvering to avoid fulfilling agreement commitments but urged seizing the opportunity to stop the fighting, rebuild Gaza, and start anew.

Residents remain pessimistic about tangible improvements, noting that since the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement last October, the only noticeable change has been increased goods entering Gaza. Many still live in tents amid chaotic conditions, with Hamas continuing to oppress dissenters. Some hope international pressure will force Hamas to disarm and leave Gaza, possibly relocating to Turkey, but fear political calculations, especially ahead of Israeli elections, will delay progress.
